The Culinary Trust Announces 2007 Richard Sax Memorial Hunger Relief Grant Recipient!

The Culinary Trust administered a $5,000 Richard Sax Memorial Hunger Relief Grant to Common Threads during the annual IACP conference in Chicago.

The mission of Common Threads is to provide a sanctuary for children to find the common threads that embrace our diversity and differences. With food and other arts as our vehicle for change, our children will teach, learn, share, and embrace their own and each others common threads. For these threads will promote understanding of our shared interests and will enhance our appreciation for our cultural diversity.

Common Threads will serve over 750 children, ages eight to twelve, and will serve 7,000 healthy meals to these children in 2007. Currently, 98% percent of students who participate in Common Threads programming are in the free or discounted school lunch program or on Medicaid. For more information about Common Threads and their program please visit their Web site at www.ourcommonthreads.org.

The Richard Sax Memorial Hunger Relief Grant

Richard Sax was an IACP member, a prolific writer who contributed to many leading magazines and the author of nine cookbooks. He won a James Beard Award and a Julia Child Award for Classic Home Desserts. He was the founding chef-director of Food & Wine and a columnist for Bon Appétit. He worked tirelessly for God’s Love We Deliver, an organization that provides food to people housebound with AIDS, the Whole Food Project of Manhattan Center for Living; and The Food and Hunger Hotline. He championed the causes of those who were victims of hunger, homelessness or prejudice, and devoted passionate energy to many food-related causes. He received the Humanitarian Award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) for his charitable work and the prestigious James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award. He died in 1995 at the age of forty-six.

Hunger-Relief Fund History
The Culinary Trust had a hunger-relief fund in place in 1992 as part of its philanthropic outreach. Donations were received from members through the annual conference registration form. In 1996, after Richard’s death, a fund drive was started by Harriet Bell, Flo Braker, Barry Estabrook, Roy Finamore, Nick Malgieri, CCP, Rux Martin and Judith Weber, all IACP members, to memorialize him and support a cause that he actively worked for - hunger-relief. Attaching Richard’s name to the Trust’s hunger-relief fund seemed like a perfect fit and made the fund appeal personal. The Trust continues to combine interest earned from the fund with IACP annual conference attendees to administer a one-time grant in IACP’s annual conference host city.
