On February 7, 1984, the late Julia Child, CCP, Shirley Corriher, CCP, and Marlene Sorosky became the first trustees of an organization named the Cooking Advancement Research and Education Foundation (CAREF). This foundation was officially incorporated to operate exclusively for charitable, research, scientific, literary and educational purposes.
Ten years later the Cooking Advancement Research and Education Foundation decided that their name was quite lengthy and a bit complicated. It had become increasingly difficult to procure scholarships, grants and sponsorships for their fundraising efforts and a lot of time was spent explaining the organization and its mission. By aligning the mission with the IACP and incorporating the IACP’s acronym in their own name, CAREF then became the IACP Foundation
At the 26th Annual International IACP Conference in Baltimore, the IACP Foundation announced yet another new name, The Culinary Trust, and a redefined mission. While still in alignment with the IACP, The Culinary Trust’s mission is to celebrate the past and fund the future through scholarships, grants and preservation programs that encourage and enable professionals in the pursuit of the culinary arts.
Past Chair of The Culinary Trust, Justin Newby, wrote an article featured in the IACP’s quarterly publication, Food Forum Quarterly (2nd Quarter 2004), describing the IACP Foundation’s name change and goals. To view the article by Justin Newby, please click here.
Numerous celebrity chefs have supported The Culinary Trust and the programs administered by the organization during the past twenty-three years. Sue Huffman, CCP’s article shares exactly why these celebrities donate their time and talent in support of the Trust. To view the article by Sue Huffman, CCP, please click here.
As a 501 (c)(3), The Culinary Trust diligently works to achieve its goals, but the Trust is continually in need of volunteers to help push its mission forward. Robyn Lee, Immediate Past Chair of The Culinary Trust (an all volunteer Board of Trustees), expresses how rewarding it can be to volunteer your time and talent and how appreciative the Trust is of those who have done so on their behalf. The Culinary Trust has been the philanthropic partner to the over 4,000 members of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) for over twenty-years. The Trust solicits, manages and distributes funds for educational and charitable programs related to the culinary industry in these areas:
- Scholarships for students and career professionals
- Library research and travel grants for food writers
- Cookbook preservation and restoration
- Hunger alleviation
